-
Course Description: Power. The word alone evokes a response. How do you think about it? How do you relate to it? Perhaps it prompts uncomfortable or even painful memories. How have you experienced other people's power? As a leader, are you someone who needs more control, or one who is far too eager to give it away? As we labor to see God's grace and our brokenness woven together in our lives and ministries, we often uncover the consequences of power used poorly and abusively in peoples' lives. At the same time, we might be surprised and grieved to learn when we ourselves are the cause of that brokenness and the reason for other’s suffering. In this 60-minute virtual course seeks to equip leaders to recognize and navigate the complexity of power dynamics within ministry teams and organizations. Grounded in gospel-centered principles, participants will engage in interactive reflections to imagine how we can steward power responsibly, cultivate equitable relationships in our teams, address misuse of power, and promote flourishing in their ministry contexts.

Instructor Bio: Dr. Jessie Swigart is an educator and scholar who seeks to create challenging and compassionate spaces in which people can learn and grow together in their knowledge of our savior Jesus Christ. She attends New City Fellowship in St. Louis, MO and enjoys gardening and visiting with neighbors while walking her rescue dog, River.
-
Course Description: The first years of ministry are an intense and often confusing time for those who seek to follow Christ and the wellbeing of His people. What does Christ-honoring ministry look like? Am I a good pastor or ministry leader? These are identity-related questions new ministry leaders may ask as they navigate the expectations of their supervisors, those they are serving, and the surrounding community. This 1-hour virtual workshop, designed for those who are new and those who support those who are new to ministry, will explore the identity formation that happens in new ministry leaders as they negotiate sometimes conflicting ideals and expectations, in themselves and in others. Our time will heavily draw from Etienne Wenger’s Communities of Practice theory, a social science theory exploring how people grow as they participate in a community of more experienced practitioners and engage in the conversations, resources, relationships, and practices of that community. As a result of our time together, participants will be able to identify the elements in their own formation of a ministry identity, and veteran ministry leaders will consider how they can better steward the relationships they have with their novice peers.
